GVM Upgrades Available for the Toyota Hilux N90 (AN2)

GVM Upgrades Available for the Toyota Hilux N90 (AN2)

The all-new Toyota Hilux N90 (AN2) is already shaping up to be one of Australia’s most capable dual-cab utes, but once you start adding touring accessories, towing gear, canopies, trays, rooftop tents, tools or work equipment, the factory payload capacity can disappear fast.

That’s where a GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) upgrade comes in to play.

Whether you’re building a touring rig, a heavy-duty work ute, or a towing setup for caravanning around Australia, a certified GVM upgrade allows your Hilux N90 to legally carry more weight while improving stability, ride control and handling while under load.

With the N90's only recently being available to the public, we've found that not all of the typical GVM suppliers have kits ready to go, that's why we've compiled what GVM upgrade options are currently available.

What Is a GVM Upgrade?

A GVM upgrade increases the maximum legal operating weight of your vehicle. This includes:
  • Passengers
  • Fuel
  • Accessories
  • Cargo
  • Tow ball weight
  • Tools and equipment
For many Hilux owners, factory payload figures quickly become inadequate once common accessories are installed. Bull bars, winches, drawer systems, long-range tanks and canopies all add weight before you even load camping gear or work equipment.

Modern GVM kits are engineered suspension systems designed to maintain safe handling, braking stability and ride quality while operating at higher loads.

Things to Consider Before Upgrading

Pre-Registration vs Post-Registration

Many GVM upgrades are easier and more flexible when completed before the vehicle is first registered. Post-registration upgrades may require, depending on state regulations:
  • Engineering inspections
  • State-specific approvals
  • Additional compliance processes

Tyre Load Ratings Matter

Several upgrade providers specify minimum tyre load and speed ratings to maintain compliance. You should always confirm wheel and tyre requirements before installation. For example, some 3570kg Hilux upgrades require:
  • Minimum load rating: 110
  • Minimum speed rating: S

A GVM Upgrade Does NOT Increase GCM

One of the most common misunderstandings is assuming a GVM upgrade also increases towing limits or Gross Combined Mass (GCM). Most systems:
  • Increase legal payload
  • Improve loaded handling
  • Maintain compliance
But do not automatically increase:
  • Braked towing capacity
  • GCM
Always confirm specifications with the manufacturer or with an expert before purchasing.

Do You Actually Need a GVM Upgrade?

Not every Hilux owner needs a GVM upgrade. Many lightly loaded vehicles remain within factory specifications and could benefit from a suspension kit instead. However, owners running:
  • Steel trays
  • Canopies
  • Drawer systems
  • Rooftop tents
  • Long-range tanks
  • Caravans
Often approach or exceed factory GVM surprisingly quickly. If your Hilux is being built for serious touring, towing or commercial work, weighing the vehicle at a public weighbridge or at your local suspensions specialist is one of the best first steps before choosing a suspension package.

Final Thoughts

The Toyota Hilux N90 (AN2) is already a highly capable platform, but modern touring and work setups can easily exceed factory payload limits once accessories and gear are added.
A properly engineered GVM upgrade:
  • Improves legal carrying capacity
  • Enhances stability under load
  • Supports safer towing
  • Helps maintain insurance and compliance
With manufacturers like West Coast Suspension, Pedders, Fulcrum and EFS already releasing certified systems for the new-generation Hilux, owners now have several strong options depending on their intended use and required payload increase.

If you’re planning a serious build, it’s worth considering a GVM upgrade early in the process, especially before registration, to maximise flexibility and compliance. Unsure if a GVM upgrade is right for you? Get in touch with our team of suspension experts for a chat!
